What is Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that mostly affects warm and moist areas of the body like urethra, rectum or throat in both men and women. In women, it can also infect the cervix. It usually transfers from one person to another through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal sex. Habits like excessive alcoholism and intravenous drug abuse also increase the likelihood of infection.

In males, it can cause scarring of the urethra and painful abscess in the penis. Besides these local complications, gonorrhea can also cause remote complications like arthritis, meningitis and heart valve damage.
