What to check before you test
Getting tested is personal, and where your data goes matters. Here's what we look at in every review, and the honest caveats by service.
Self-pay vs. insurance
Most services here are self-pay, so nothing reaches your insurer and no Explanation of Benefits is generated. Nurx is the exception: it bills insurance, which is cheaper but does create a record.
Discreet billing
Charges rarely say “STD.” STDcheck and HealthLabs show “HealthLabs.com,” Priority shows “SFHT,” and Nurx shows “Nurx.co” on your statement.
HIPAA & data sharing
All are HIPAA-compliant, but it's not flawless: Nurx and Wisp have had website tracking-pixel data-sharing issues, and a 2019 vendor breach (AMCA) exposed millions of Quest and Labcorp patients.
Anonymity & reporting
You can usually test privately without insurance, but labs are legally required to report positive results for certain STIs (like HIV and syphilis) to public health authorities.
