How to read it
What a DFI number means — and what it doesn't
DFI is the share of sperm carrying damaged DNA. It matters because a standard semen analysis — count, motility, morphology — doesn't measure it: sperm can look and swim normally while still carrying fragmented DNA. Higher DFI is linked in some studies to lower conception odds and a greater chance of miscarriage, so it can add useful context, especially with recurrent pregnancy loss or failed fertility treatment.

The ~15% / ~30% edges are widely cited (most often for SCSA-style DFI) but are not a universal pass/fail line — no standardized cutoff exists across assays. No value here is a diagnosis. What a DFI result can't tell you
A DFI value is a snapshot of DNA damage in one sample — it is not a diagnosis and not a fertility verdict. It does not tell you whether you can father a child: many men with an elevated DFI conceive, naturally or with help. And the evidence that any single technique accurately predicts fertility or miscarriage is limited, which is exactly why both ASRM and the AUA/ASRM guideline say DNA-fragmentation testing is not part of the routine, initial workup — it's reserved for select cases like recurrent pregnancy loss or failed fertility treatment.
Where a high result earns its keep is as a prompt to look for a treatable cause with a reproductive urologist or fertility specialist — a varicocele, an infection, or lifestyle factors like smoking, heat exposure, obesity, oxidative stress, or a very long abstinence interval before the sample. Depending on the picture, a clinician might discuss antioxidants (evidence is mixed), treating the underlying cause, or, in assisted reproduction, techniques such as ICSI or using testicular sperm.
