The panel at Clinica Sierra Vista runs herpes serology and hepatitis C antibody testing alongside gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV. Plus a TB test. Reading these numbers: reported case rates only count infections that were actually tested for and diagnosed, so they track local screening effort as much as true spread: a higher rate can reflect more testing, a lower one less. Either way, most STIs cause no symptoms, so treat the figures above as context rather than a verdict, and test on the CDC's schedule regardless of how your area looks.

Pregnant or planning to be? Congenital syphilis is the fastest-rising STI: what to test, and when

Congenital syphilis, passed from parent to baby in pregnancy, is the fastest-rising STI in the country. U.S. cases climbed from 2,163 in 2020 to 3,882 in 2023. It is almost entirely preventable: the CDC recommends a syphilis test at the first prenatal visit, and every clinic and lab listed for Kern County tests for syphilis.

About Mettler, CA

CA 166 cuts through Mettler as the Maricopa Highway, connecting a community where most households own their homes and average nearly four people under one roof. A family-forward place where health decisions often get weighed against everyone else's schedule, not just your own. With married adults making up a relatively small share of the population, many of those multi-person households are extended families or unmarried partners navigating life together, which shapes how conversations about sexual health happen, or get deferred. The economic picture adds real texture here.

Unemployment is notably high, and fewer than one in ten households clears six figures, while typical rents stay low enough that housing itself isn't the squeeze, but a job gap at this scale means that weekday clinic hours can genuinely conflict with shift work or unpredictable schedules. Nearly seven in ten residents are in the labor force, so most people are working; they just may not have the flexibility to absorb a mid-week appointment easily. Kern County's STI figures are what they are, and the younger adults here, people in their late teens and twenties, fall squarely in the years when exposure and transmission run highest. Staying current with screening, given those county-level patterns, is less an abstract precaution than a reasonable response to where Mettler sits geographically and epidemiologically.

Confidentiality & consent in California Minor consent and partner treatment (EPT) under state law, plus how to test privately

Two things that actually depend on California law: who can consent, and whether partners can be treated without their own visit. Everything else about testing privately is the same nationwide (see below).

Can a minor consent on their own?

In California, a minor aged 12 or older can consent to confidential STI testing and treatment on their own, no parental permission is required.

Can my partner be treated too? (EPT)

California permits Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT): if you test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhea, your provider can give you medication (or a prescription) to pass to your partner, no separate exam or appointment needed for them.

Keeping a test private works the same in every state. Whether an STD test shows on insurance (the EOB), how to test anonymously, and self-pay options that leave no insurance trail don’t change by location.
